I have always had a fascination with Maine, my father was was from Gardner Massachusetts, we had visited Maine with my parents when we were young and my grand father on my mothers side was related to the Chessman's in Maine . So there was always a need to see where at least part of my heritage had emerged and if those family stories were truth or fiction. A place so vast it takes years to explore and a journey that one must immerse themselves in to find those gems hidden just beyond the tall pines that line the side of every road.

"Morning Light Maine," Oil on Panel,10.5 x 24 Inches
I have explored the coast of Maine all the way to the top by car as far as Canada and onto Nova Scotia. Painting in many locations but I would have to say my two favorite places are Machias and Port Clyde. Rustic quiet Terrain saturated with hidden stories where nature’s subtle, simple beauty causes one to pause, reflect, and become immersed in the gentle rhythms that enhance its remote beauty.

"Marshall Point", Oil on Panel , 24 x 36 inches, Private Collection
Exploring this coastline is never an easy feat as one traverses the rocky coast attempting to carefully observe the colors, textures, and light that create a visual symphony. All I can say is that Maine is a unique place for artists, an evocative landscape which offers a trove of inspiration.

"Maine Afternoon", Oil on Panel ,12 x 24 inches,
The paintings I have created in these locations are a celebration of place and simple beauty of coastal landscapes. Each painting begins with careful observation capturing my first impressions through the medium of watercolor. I spend hours in the environment, absorbing the play of light , value and atmosphere that define a place. I photograph the scenes I am thinking of painting in oils for future reference for when I return to my studio helping to enhance my memory and refine my paintings of a scene which captured my imagination.
